Call for Applications - Coach Development Initiatives

Subject: Call for Applications - Coach Development Initiatives

DATE:     December 29, 2009

MEMO TO:             Provincial Rowing Associations
                                 Inter- Provincial Coaches Committee
                                 RCA Member Clubs
                  cc.          Donna Atkinson, Peter Cookson

FROM:                     Carolyn Trono, Director of Coach Education

SUBJECT:         Call for Applications - Coach Development Initiatives

Recently, Rowing Canada Aviron has confirmed funding and objectives for a number of our coach development initiatives. In keeping with the movement to align our programs with the RCA long-term athlete development model and our system of coach education, we are asking for applications from coaches wishing to further their development in a practical learning situation. These initiatives recognize the importance of quality coaching at all levels and within all contexts. Therefore, there are three areas of focus as described below.

Applications will be accepted until Friday January 22, 2010. Applications will be reviewed January 25-29, 2010 and successful proposals will be announced the following week.

Please note that all applicants must be registered members in good standing with their Provincial Rowing Associations and Rowing Canada Aviron.

1.     RCA Mentoring Initiative

This project is aimed at coaches working with novice to intermediate level rowers (LTAD- training to train and/or learning to compete rowers).  While formal NCCP workshops are helpful, we would like to encourage projects that are based on practical hands-on coaching situations by working with a mentor or more experienced coach. Applicants may consider having the mentor travel to the coach's home club or the applicant could travel to the mentor coach's club. Considerations will be given to (but not limited to) projects that focus on practical coaching such as:
·      Rigging for the Training to Train rower
·      Development and monitoring of the training program for rowers within this stage
·      Running effective on water sessions with small boats
·      Coaching sculling with Juniors or beginning rowers
·      Running an effective time trials
·      Strength training

Applications should include learning objective(s), name of mentor, method of learning (where, when, how) and proposed budget.

Project costs could range from $500 - $1000.

2.     RCA Apprenticeship Initiative

This initiative is aimed at coaches working within the range of intermediate rowers and those being identified for a National Development Squad (late stage learning to compete and/or train to compete rowers).
The intent is to have the identified coach(es) work in a National Training Centre or National Team Camp environment with RCA National Team Coaches for an extended period of time.  This could be for one training camp (4-7 days) or a series of visitations (3-4 visits for 2 days).

Applicants will be considered based on:
·      Track record of athletes being developed to RCA National Teams (JNT, U23 or Sr A)
·      Placing at National Rowing Championships, Royal Canadian Henley or Canada Summer Games.
·      Quality of submission and learning objectives
·      NCCP qualifications

Applicants are encouraged to be creative based on your assessment of your current strengths and areas where additional experience is needed.

Project costs could range from $1500 - $3000.

3.     RCA – CAC Women in Coaching Initiative

In partnership with the Coaching Association of Canada, Rowing Canada Aviron has provided funding for projects to help provincial rowing associations increase the number of female coaches and to raise the certification levels for Canada Summer Games.  Once again, Rowing Canada Aviron has received this funding and will match with additional resources to support this program.  Provincial Rowing Associations (PRA) are asked to submit applications to access this funding to support  common RCA and PRA strategic initiatives.

Applications will be considered based on:
·      Strong link to RCA and PRA strategic plan;
·      Articulation of a clear objective and program outcome as it relates to coach development;
·      Indication of continuity for this program outcome (ie. What will be phase 2 of project in 2010/2011)
·      Indication of PRA and additional financial contribution.

Project grants could range from $1000 - $2000 in year 1. Additional funds may be available based on RCA and CAC contributions in 2010/2011 fiscal year.

If you have any questions or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me at ctrono@mts.net

Wishing you all the best for the holiday season and into the New Year!

Junior Team Update and Info on Shorter Erg Tests

Greetings and Happy Holidays:

The Junior Team will be coming out with it's selection document and other team details in the New Year. Although many things will be consistent with past years, there are some new ideas and we wanted to iron these out before distributing the info. The March Winter camp (by invite only) will still be taking place in BC, so it is important that you continue training and submit your scores. There was some positive improvements on December scores from last year so we are pleased to see that athletes and coaches are training hard and moving in the right direction. Keep it going everyone- Canadian rowers and coaches are as good as anywhere else in the world!

The shorter erg tests that we are asking for are a 100 meter test and a 1 minute test. Both of these are done at dampers of 110 for junior women and 120 for junior men. Simply adjust your erg screens for the appropriate distance or time and wind it up and go as hard as you can for your best score. For the 100m test, submit your time and split average, and for the 1' test, submit your distance and split average.
YOU WILL NOT SUBMIT THOSE ONLINE BUT RATHER SEND IN YOUR SCORES TO TEAM LEADERS JOHN RUSCITTI AND GAVIN MCKAY. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME, BIRTHDATES, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, AND SCHOOL/CLUB ARE ALSO INCLUDED. THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS JAN 10TH, 2010. The primary reasons we are doing the shorter tests is to allow for newcomers and younger athletes to participate in the erg monitoring program while of course including older, more mature junior rowers. These erg tests are easy to do and can easily be incorporated into a practice. Do them several times if you wish and submit your best score by the deadline. All are welcome even if this is your first time participating in the junior/erg monitoring program. Scores will be published anonymously for all to see...and hey, good news, no RCA membership numbers needed!

Erg scores from December have been forwarded by National Team manager Adam Parfitt. If you did not see the scores, let me know and I will forward them to you.

Cheers and have a restful yet invigorating holiday season.

Stay active!

C2 website virtual team

It has come to my attention that there are 2 St.Catharines Rowing Club teams on the C2 website.  The majority of people are on the team that is St.Catharines Rowing Club, St.Catharines Ontario team ID#2132.  It is also important that you check the box to show yor name in the honour board and standings.  It would be great if everyone was on the same team so that we are all working towards the same goal and so that we can all see how each other is doing.  This has already been a great way to encourage everyone to participate and to keep training.
I strongly encourage EVERYONE to take part in this team on the ConceptII website:
http://www.concept2.com/us/default.asp

HIGH SCHOOL COACHES - please forward this to all the athletes to get them involved
CLUB COACHES - please forward this to all the athletes to get them involved
MASTERS REPS - please forward this to all the athletes to get them involved

There is a Virtual Challenge in January that we can all accept participation in now.....this is yet another great way to use the website to help us all to train together and to motivate each other.

Thank you

RADAR Update

The second data capture deadline for RADAR testing will be Sunday, February 14th.  A detailed schedule and testing protocol will be posted to the ROWONTARIO website on January 8, 2010.  This will only be the Ergometer Testing Battery portion of the program as the winter weather prevents us from rowing!

WHO should submit a score:  All athletes that receive OAAP funding must submit score results.  In addition, any athlete wishing to be considered for an entry in the 2010 NRC should submit score results.  Please note, the testing is not designed for U17 athletes.

WHY February: The February date is works well as a capture date as University athletes will have transitioned in November/December and Ontario athletes will be back training for a month prior to the capture date.  This will give a good base point measurement to compare against in September and ultimately may be used for future carding criteria.  For example, one should expect an increase in score in the ergometer performance in September relative to the results in February.

Note: Performance at the 2010 CIRC can be used for the 2k submission.
