UMPIRE CERTIFICATION CLINIC

WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE TO WATCH A RACE?... from the UMPIRE BOAT!

DID YOU KNOW?

· There are more that 35 sanctioned regattas in Ontario every year?

· A minimum four (4) RCA licensed umpires MUST be “on duty” at all regattas – for the duration of the regatta?

· Umpires are not all old and crabby? They are dedicated to ensuring that regattas are safe and that athletes are treated fairly.

· Umpires can be rowers, coaches, parents/relatives of rowers, anyone who wants to watch racing up close. It’s a great job for Masters rowers.

· New Umpires are assigned a Mentor Umpire who can help them “learn the ropes” and answer their questions

QUALIFICATIONS:
· Some knowledge and a love of rowing from your experience as a rower, coach, parent, volunteer

· A strong desire to ensure that regattas are safe and athletes are always treated fairly

· Availability to attend and umpire at some regattas each season.

TO BECOME A CERTIFIED RCA UMPIRE YOU WILL:

· Attend a one-day RCA Clinic (the cost of the clinic is $30.00) and become familiar with the RCA Rules of Racing– this will qualify you as an RCA Associate Umpire

· Attend a minimum of five (5) different regattas as an Associate Umpire over the next two (2) years and partner with a Mentor Umpire to become familiar with all aspects of umpiring

· Successfully complete the RCA written and practical umpire examinations by the end of the second year after your initial clinic.

ROWONTARIO will be conducting an Umpire certification clinic on Saturday May 9 in St. Catharines in the Umpires Room on Henley Island. The cost is $30.00 payable at the door. To register, please email Jessica Perry at admin@rowontario.ca by April 29, 2009.

FW: Saturday Junior Camp

Greetings everyone:

Lookingn forward to seeing everyone out on Saturday and it looks like a warm one. I want to run the camp on schedule and on time as I know SCRC athletes have to return for their Stotes time trials and others are coming from out of town. The schedule looks like this:

11.00 am    Meeting in pavillion

11.30 am    Session #1 on water

1.00   pm    Core session

1.15   pm    Lunch

2.00   pm    Session #2

3.30   pm    Post row stretch and wrap up

Please arrive ahead of 11 am to rig your boats and ready it for the on water sessions. We want to move on schedule.

I will be at the club by 10.00 am.

The rowing sessions are designed to be technical in nature to assist you with small boat development. The camp is not selection but rather an opportunity to get exposed to other junior athletes and coaches and to spend time on the course where the National Junior Trials will occur on June1/2. There will also be updates on the jujnior program discussed at the meeting- it is important to be in the loop.

Remember- Sunday, April 26th is the deadline for the last erg score submission of the year with the RCA erg monitoring program ( 2k or 6k).

Thanks and see you on Saturday morning. I will be checking e-mails on Friday evening and Saturday morning around 9.00 am will be the last time I check for any updates. Looking forward to seeing everyone....

This does take place on tag day so please make sure that your tagging responsibilities are taken care of.

Greetings-
It's been a terrible spring for getting on the water, and being ready - but the traditional Head of the Martindale is set to run again, on May 9.  Everyone is at the same disadvantage, for lack of preparation & water time, so come for the workout, the BBQ, the great Hudson T-shirts and the FUN.  What a great way to start the season!!
Attached is the information and entry form.  Feel free to forward it to anyone who might be interested.  We will mail it to clubs in Ontario and nearby New York, but email is the best way to get to the individuals.  Also attached are the results from last year, so you can plan who to beat!  Everyone always enjoys this beginning of the season.
Looking forward to seeing many old (and young) friends.  It's always a social (& competitive) gathering!!
Nancy
(P.S. Peter Somerwil is organizing a new Masters regatta for Saturday, June 20 - the Tony Biernacki Memorial, being held in Welland.  Save that date on your calendars too!!)

Junior Camp

Greetings:

A reminder that there is a junior camp on Saturday, April 25th with the focus on pairs and singles ( and doubles). All junior aged rowers are welcome...please begin making arrangements to secure equipment as it will be difficult to gather enough equipment at the host club. Coaches are welcome and encouraged to attend and assist with the camp. The likely location is the South Niagara Rowing club in Welland- we are waiting on just some final details to confirm this location. The official announcement of the camp will be out in the next day or two. The selection for the Junior National Team will take place on June 1-2 in Welland in pairs and singles, so this camp is a great opportunity to get on the course and get some valuable time and coaching in your small boat.

Please remember that the final erg score submission is due April 26th and can be a 2k or a 6k score. Please commit to submitting a score.

Good training days to you in the days ahead...talk to you soon.

Key Dates for the National Junior Program

Greetings Athletes and Coaches:

While most of you are tipping your oars into the spring waters and taking some of your first strokes of 2009, I wanted to give you a heads up to some of the key dates to mark on your calendars for the National Junior Program and the various opportunities that are offered. Please note that for the upcoming camps, the primary focus is on small boats as the pairs and singles are the selection tool used (National Junior Trials held in June). To that end, it is important to do some planning and organizing for yourself to find some practice time in these respective boat classes so you are best prepared for success in selection at the Trials. The club(s) that host the camps are usually quite stretched for equipment so it is critical that you make arrangements to secure a boat and have it transported for the camp (similar to what will have to occur for the National Trials). We will do all that we can to assist you with participating in the camp, but your assistance with equipment will be very helpful and appreciated. I will be in touch with you throughout the upcoming months but feel free to ask questions or seek direction on any areas pertaining to the National Junior Program. We want to help the program and its participants pursue excellence and compete with the best in the world. In the spirit of the pursuit of excellence, we also want to extend a warm welcome to Peter Cookson, the new Director of High Performance for RCA.
