Adaptive Rowing and Coaching Weekend

Dear All - RowOntario will host a weekend of adaptive rowing and coaching late this summer.  The goal is to get the adaptive rowing community together for a weekend to recruit new rowers and coaches and educate through sharing coaching and rowing ideas.  The weekend is scheduled for September 12 and 13 in Sudbury.  The RowOntario Adaptive Rowing Committee is organizing the weekend and would like your input on what you would like to get out of such a weekend.

We have funding to bring in experts for workshop modules.  Suggestions for modules so far include athlete training and care, rigging and strapping, erg technique and training options, and on-water coaching ideas and strategies.  The Sudbury Rowing Club has an accessible boathouse and boats will be available for LTA, TA and AS rowing.

Please reply with any ideas for the weekend that you may have.  Most importantly, send a list of topics the you would like to see covered and possibly any experts in the field that you would recommend.

RowOntario and the Coaches Association of Ontario have committed substantial funds to make this weekend possible.  Now we need your help to make it a success - to insure that this funding is well spent and will be available in the future.  Please plan on attending the weekend and give us suggestions on how the weekend can meet your needs and the needs of other coaches and athletes interested in adaptive rowing.

Thomas

Tony Biernacki Regatta

Folks,
For 2009 the entry fee for the Tony Biernacki Regatta June 20th in Welland (North Course), will be the responsibility of the athletes.  This is due to the regatta announcement coming after the rowing clubs budgetary planning for 2009.  Truck and trailer for the event will be supplied for the regatta so that equipment can get to the site.
Please submit all entries to me so that I can enter them in the Regatta Central online entry system.  No entry will be entered into the system until a cheque has been received for the entry.  Cheques to be made out to the St.Catharines Rowing Club.
Entries are due to me by June 13th.  With your entry and your cheque please include ALL information including birth dates and letter category for racing.

Thank you

Mark Welsh
Head Coach
St.Catharines Rowing Club

CanAmMex Announcement

Dear coaches,

We were recently informed by US Rowing they are withdrawing from entering this years CanAmMex scheduled to be held in Mexico City July 15 to 19. Their reason for withdrawing stems from the recent outbreak of H1N1 outbreak and concerns for safety of US citizens in Mexico at the present time.

After due deliberation, Rowing Canada has also made the decision to withdraw from the competition based on our concern for the welfare of our athletes. The Mexican organizers of the event have been informed of this decision.

As an alternative, US Rowing has offered both Mexico Rowing and Rowing Canada the option to compete as CanAmMex teams at the US Club Nationals to be held in Oak Ridge Tennessee from July 15 to 19. US Rowing will  be fielding a complete team for this event and we have decided to accept the offer to attend the US Club Nationals.

Selection for this event will follow the same process as for the CanAmMex team and the selected team will compete as the Canadian team at the US Club Nationals. Selection will be based on results at the upcoming Junior Trials and our plan of course is to put together a team that will be very competitive while providing to our young athletes an experience that will be rewarding, enjoyable and a good platform for long term athlete development.

I would ask that you pass on this message to any of your coaches who have athletes competing at next weeks trials.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions and look forward to seeing many of you at the Junior trials early next week.

High Performance Director

Announcement to Ontario Athletes

NOTICE TO ALL ONTARIO ATHLETES

The final selection processes for the 2009 National Rowing Championships and the 2009-2010 Ontario Athlete Assistance Program (OAAP = Quest for Gold Cards) have not yet been finalized.

However, at this time we are now announcing that all athletes interested in representing Ontario at the 2009 National Championship Regatta and athletes interested in applying for 2009-2010 Ontario Athlete Assistance Program (OAAP) funding will require a RADAR score to be considered for both the NRC and the OAAP.

This will be mandatory criteria in both selection processes.

In order to achieve this, athletes MUST compete at the Ontario Assessment Camp on August 23, 2009 in Welland, ON.

This will be a small boat (1X's and 2-'s) time trial event.

Additional details on this event will be released soon.

Between the August 23 and September 15, athletes must also complete a skill assessment and a testing battery.  For more information on the RADAR program, please visit the Coach and Athlete Resources section of the ROWONTARIO website at www.rowontario.ca

If you have any questions, contact Provincial Coach Phil Marshall via email at coach@rowontario.ca
