2008 ONTARIO SUMMER GAMES

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT REGATTA & CAMP
The Ontario Summer Games are coming to Ottawa! The rowing event will take place in Ottawa on Thursday, August 14th following the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
Events: Men’s 2x, Women’s 2x, Mixed 4+
One crew from each district – each athlete participates in one event.
Note: If there is a shortage of athletes from a district, ROWONTARIO will fill those spots from other districts.

Format: 2000M seeding time trial, followed by match sprint 500M medal round finishing in front of the Ottawa Rowing Club boathouse.

Selection: Open to rowers U19 and U17, with priority going to U17 athletes

Male 2 2 1 male or female
Female 2 2 1 male or female

Selection will be done by ROWONTARIO committee based on results from; JNT trial – Welland, June 2nd-3rd and the ROWONTARIO Championships July 26th-27th in Welland
All interested rowers, coxswains and coaches should email Provincial Coach, Phil Marshall at: coach@rowontario.ca by July 20, 2008 with the following information: Name, Date of Birth, Club and the events entered at the RO Championships. Selected athletes will be notified at the RO Championships, following the regatta.

Provisional Schedule
Wednesday 13th – arrive in Ottawa, register/rig/row the course, opening ceremonies
Thursday 14th – racing and afternoon development session
Friday 15th – checkout

Other Features
· Includes 2 night’s accommodation and meals while in Ottawa.
· Participation in Opening Ceremonies August 13.
· ROWONTARIO will support the attendance of six coaches. Coaches should have minimum NCCP Level 2 and must have recent Police Check – Police check must be less than 1 year old. (Obtained Sept 1, 2007 or later)
· A travel allowance will be provided to eligible participants.
· Athlete participation fee yet to be finalized – will be maximum $150.00 per participant.

ROWONTARIO will hold two athlete identification camps for Canada Games Eligible Athletes, born in 1989 or later;
Women’s Team Camp: Welland, ON June 21st-22nd
Men’s Team Camp: Cardinal, ON June 28th-29th

Women’s Camp
*12 Heavyweight Athletes (will train in 4-‘s/8+)
* 6 Lightweight Athletes (will train in 2x’s)
* 2 Coxswains

Men’s Camp
* 12 Heavyweight Athletes (will train in 4-‘s/8+s)
* 8 Lightweight Athletes (will train in 4-s)
* 2 Coxswains

Camp Invitations - Athletes will be invited in accordance with the following criteria:
* 2007-2008 Race Results
* 2008 2k/6k ergometer results
* Coach Consultation

OUR BELOVED BOATMAN HAS PASSED ON

MANOOGIAN, George (Mooner) - On Thursday, February 14th, 2008. George Manoogian was 81 years of age, great husband of Bonnie, loving father of the late Craig. Mooner was the loved brother of Archie, the late Rose Bedrosian, the late Doris Manaserian, and several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews.

Mooner was a long time member of the St. Catharines Rowing Club, former member of Ridley Graduate Boat Club. George was the team manager for several Olympic, Pan American, British Empire Games and World Championship Rowing Crews, a member of Rowing Canada Aviron, St. Catharines Rowing Alumni Association, Canadian Henley Rowing Corporation. George loved collecting, trading and designing Rowing and Olympic pins and was known around the world as "THE PIN MAN" and was very active as a supervisor with the John Howard Society, a member of a couple of Local Masonic Lodges. Mooner was an avid skier and an accomplished roller skater in his youth at Alexandra Hall on Ontario Street.

Mooner's family will receive their friends at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL 585 Carlton Street, on Sunday, February 17th, 2008 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A celebration of Mooner's life will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 12:30pm followed by a reception at the Alumni Clubhouse on Henley Island.

The family encourage donations to The St. Catharines Rowing Club or Hospice Niagara in Mooner's memory.

"When I come to the end of the road, and the sun is set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room, why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too much, and not with your head held low. Remember the joy and laughter we shared and lovingly let me go."- MOONER
